If you’re dealing with hot upstairs rooms or high energy bills, chances are your insulation could use some attention. One of the most common questions we get at Zhe Industries is: Should I go with blown-in or batt insulation?
Let’s break it down, quick and simple.
Blown-In Insulation
This is loose-fill insulation, usually made of fiberglass or cellulose, that’s “blown” into place using a machine.
Pros:
Fills gaps and hard-to-reach spaces easily
Great for attics and retrofits
Quick install
Good for irregularly shaped areas
Cons:
Can settle over time
Requires special equipment to install
Batt Insulation
These are the large, fluffy rolls or sheets (usually made of fiberglass) that you may have seen in attics or walls.
Pros:
Easy to DIY in open spaces
Lower upfront cost
Works well in standard-sized framing
Cons:
Gaps around pipes or wiring can reduce effectiveness
Less ideal for oddly shaped or tight spaces
So… Which One’s Better?
It depends on your home.
In Virginia’s humid climate, blown-in insulation typically provides better coverage and performance in attic spaces, especially in older homes with uneven framing. But batt insulation still has its place in new builds or when walls are wide open.
